SCHOOL HIGHLIGHT: Bald Eagle Area High School

From classroom learning to advanced career training, Bald Eagle Area High School offers comprehensive educational opportunities for a variety of students.

Located less than 30 minutes from State College and Penn State, the high school is the flagship school in the Bald Eagle Area School District. The joint middle-high school enrolls about 950 students in grades 6 through 12, and employs almost 70 teachers.

This Centre County school district is in tune with our rapidly changing world, and aims to prepare young people for this challenge. By giving them extensive academic knowledge and skill, educators hope it will form a foundation for future success. The school offers a range of programs for this purpose.

While students are permitted to choose electives, they’re required to complete four credits each in mathematics, science and language arts. Additional required fields of study include social studies, physical education, and the arts and humanities. A variety of unique electives exist, including — for example — animal/veterinary science, forestry and wildlife management, foods around the world, field and stream to table, furniture and cabinet construction, digital electronics and more.

While there’s plenty of coursework to choose from at the school, students have more options. Those with a 3.0 GPA and a letter of recommendation from a staff member can participate in dual enrollment, a program designed for students in grades 10-12 who would like to receive college-level instruction during their time at the high school. Through this program, students can take courses from Clarion University and California University of Pennsylvania.

Students also have the option to attend the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology, a school founded in 1969 to meet the career and technical needs of high school students in Centre County. This is a great opportunity for students to get a jump start on career training, especially for those planning on going into a field that requires a certificate. Attendees can work toward certification in various fields, including cosmetology, automotive science technology, culinary arts, cyber security, dentistry and more.

Another educational opportunity at the high school — this one aimed at college-bound seniors —  is the college credit program. In this program, students spend half-days of their senior year at one of three local institutes of higher learning. They’ll be admitted as non-degree students and must meet regular freshman admission requirements, but will earn credit for the courses taken. Students can attend Penn State University, Lock Haven University or South Hills School of Business and Technology.

The school also offers a variety of extracurricular activities, including school musical, school play, yearbook, LEO Service Leaders Club, chorus, Envirothon, FBLA, marching band, mock trial, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions, student government and more.

For student athletes, options are plentiful and include interscholastic and intramural options. Students can pick from a list of sports, including cheerleading, cross country, track and field, football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, baseball, softball, Powder Puff Football and bowling.

It’s clear that variety is king at Bald Eagle Area High School, where students have a plethora of opportunities both in the classroom and on the athletic field. No matter what academic path a student chooses, they'll be working toward a better future … one course at a time.
